Background

My name is Andrew. I began working with surfboards in 2014, in the Anderson Surfboards factory in Whangamata, NZ. I started out as “ding boy” for years, before being trained up and eventually progressing to sanding and finishing new custom boards.

At around the same time, I stumbled across Dunedin during a mid-winter van trip and immediately fell in love with the coast, the waves, and the city. I knew I’d found my place.

Fast forwarding to 2024, I started Frozen Ocean – firstly operating out of a garden shed in Waitati, before setting up in the iconic Blue Boat Shed at Carey’s Bay. Nowadays Frozen Ocean is based in a dedicated ding repair workshop in near St Clair, Dunedin, located only a few minutes away from some of the most consistent surf in New Zealand.

Philosophy

Surfboards somehow surpass the realm of your everyday material object. Perhaps it is the way they connect us to the energy of the ocean, perhaps it is the memories we share with them on our search for waves. Whatever it is, they’re worth looking after.

By providing an easy and affordable ding repair service, my ethos is to keep boards in the water and out of landfills. Any board is able to be fixed, so why not keep our favourites sea-worthy instead of ordering a new one straight away?

Frozen Ocean is an inclusive entity that reflects the pure passion we all have for the frigid waters of the South. Surfing down here requires a certain level of commitment (and madness); it’s an environment that encourages one to leave their ego and judgement at the door.

The goal of Frozen Ocean is be approachable and reliable, providing the best quality repairs and restorations in the South Island, while upholding the values that drew us all to the ocean in the first place.
